Second-grade core subjects visually come alive through vivid illustrations, photos, and videos. Literacy in social studies is encouraged through read-along and highlight features that allow students to learn, gather research and document their findings in civics, history, and geography. Children can choose from six different games to reinforce content information. Social-Emotional Learning is also supported by lessons teaching children self-awareness and self-management.

Authentic Learning Opportunities:

Students get to witness real-life videos, maps of real-life places, and real-life people. The world opens up for your children as the timelines of history come alive. Students can search for their own topics of interest. Accessible resources, at your fingertips, are inspiring tools to achieve your academic goals. Critical thinking skills guide student open-ended inquiries. The metacognitive abilities of your child are developed with this well-organized, easy-to-follow learning tool. Students have opportunities to share their findings and responses with others.

Developmental Appropriate Practice:

Students explore aspects of social-emotional learning through themes of self-awareness and self-management. Students learn to understand one's own emotions, thoughts, and values. Identify their strengths and limitations. Self-efficacy lessons build a child's confidence and purpose. A calm down center leads children through the steps to calm down and ways to manage stress effectively. Students learn how to identify and manage their emotions,  thoughts, and behavior effectively in a variety of settings. Personal goals and aspirations are explored. Several correlations are made to the character strengths of self-discipline and self-motivation. Culturally relevant issues are addressed and diversity is celebrated in the stories of people who have made American great by overcoming adversity.

State Bingo and Road Trip US

Students get to play two games State Bingo and Road Trip. Engaging illustrations allow children to visualize the states across our country. Pip, the car, will take you on an easy, medium, or challenge level for differentiated modes of travel. You will learn U.S. State names, capitals, locations, landmarks, landforms, neighbors, and historical facts. Drive safely, and be careful not to get flat tires or reach a dead end.

Authentic Learning Opportunities:

Students develop their cognitive skills as they witness real-life names and places on their maps. Critical thinking skills are developing through map directions and a variety of locations of historical significance. Academic relevance of several different trip routes includes an Eastbound trip, Westbound Trip, Lewis and Clark Trail, Oregon Trail, and Pony Express Trail.  Collaboration Skills are developed as children join together to finish road trips together. Open-ended possibilities will take you anywhere you want to go when you choose your destination.

Developmentally Appropriate Practice:

Students choose their traveling plans based on their interests and academic levels. Geography is explored and visually represented on the United States map. Map navigation through many U.S. regions develops children’s skills.  Geography standards include applying basic mapping elements to read maps (G1.2.1). Use maps to identify cultural and environmental characteristics of places (G1.2.2). Use maps and pictures to describe places and relationships and interactions that shape them (G1.2.3).

History geographically comes to life on guided tours of ancient trails. The famous Lewis and Clark Trail, the Oregon Trail, as well as the Pony Express Trail, demonstrate how various individuals in their communities have shaped local history (H2.2.1). Also, the collaborations between the states to complete these trials document how actively working together, with people of different backgrounds and cultures, does have lasting benefits (H2.2.2). The celebration of diversity and the complexity of multifaceted teamwork across our country is truly inspirational.
