Starfall
Starfall's Motto: At Starfall, children have fun while they learn.
Starfall’s Philosophy is through play, exploration, and positive reinforcement, students become more confident and intrinsically motivated. The founder’s purpose is to provide free educational activities that are research-based and align with Common Core Standards in language arts, mathematics, and social-emotional development. Starfall, for kindergarten through third grade, has presented a collection of books, movies, songs, and educational games that students access online under organized grade levels. Reading abilities are needed to navigate the second-grade level activities.
Authentic Learning Opportunities:
Math activities for the second grade use real-world applications to teach students the conceptual meaning of word problems. Activities facilitate open-ended inquire opportunities and develop children’s critical thinking skills. Children continue to develop their metacognition skills as they advance through the levels of mathematical challenges just right for them. Children engage in social learning as they collaborate with others to complete the tasks presented on their journey. Children also direct their own learning as they complete their projects on their own timelines.
Developmentally Appropriate Practice:
Developmentally appropriate practices work with children’s interests and motivation to encourage competence in a wide range of common core standards. The Common Core State Standards in Mathematics for adding and subtracting within 20 (2.OA.B.2., 2.OA.C.3), relate addition and subtraction to length (2.OA.C.4 2MD.B.6) place value and base ten (2NBT.A.1, 2.NBT.A.3), properties of operations to add and subtract (2.NBT.B.7, 2.NBT.B.8) odd or even groups of objects up to 20 (2.OA.B.2, 2.OA.C.3) and multiplication (3.OA.A.1, 3.OA.B.5, 3.OA.C.7).
Numbers are a universal language used to build, calculate, and solve problems around the world. Each culture values the unique disciplines embedded in the field of mathematics. Starfall is sensitive to the value and need for competent mathematicians in every nation of the world and is equipping their students to be the best at what they do with a strong foundation in mathematics.
Imagine Math
“Our Mission is to change lives and open doors of opportunity for children everywhere.” stated founder and executive chairman, Susan Preator. Math activities are organized into 15 - 20 minute lessons in a sequenced order. Each grade level has about 100 lessons. Imagine Math Facts focuses solely on the practice of math facts. Math Facts are the building blocks to gain a foundation for algebra. Math games make math facts fluency a fun and easy task. Math facts are completed faster and with more accuracy every time the child completes their tasks while on an epic journey. Students or families can click on reports and check their child’s progress. Teachers and parents may create custom pathways or assign multiple path options.
Authentic Learning Opportunities:
Real-world problems are presented in a game-like format. Problem-solving skills are developed through critical thinking skills and metacognition. Students complete math problems within the context of real-life scenes on a playground, workshop, barn, fruit orchard, and vegetable garden. After students complete a lesson, the maps open where they can visit the music hall, information center, treasure island, and the fair. Collaborative opportunities encourage students to construct viable arguments and critique the explanation of others.
Developmentally Appropriate Practice:
Developmentally appropriate lessons and activities follow closely grade level performance expectations. Imagine math proves proven, effective adaptive math practice to build competence in the four common core mathematics areas. Operations and algebra thinking requires children to represent and solve problems utilizing their addition and subtraction skills (2.OA.A.1), add and subtract within the quantity of 20 (2.OA.B.2), and work with equal groups of objects to gain a foundation for multiplication (2.OA.C.3). Numbers and operations in base ten require students to understand place value (2.NBT.A) and use their place value understanding and the properties of operations of addition and subtraction to solve problems (2.NBT.B). Measurement & data requires students to measure and estimate lengths in standard units (2.MD.A), utilize addition and subtraction to determine the length (2.MA.B), work with time and money (2.MD.C), and represent and interpret data accurately (2.MA.D). Geometry standards require students to use reason to identify shapes and their attributes (2.G.A). ). These valuable mathematic competencies prepare students to be successful in their spheres of influence. Family expectations for their students’ success will be achieved. Let Imagine Math partner with your family and open the doors of opportunity for your child.
